Our study of Judges continues with two obscure men, Tola and Jair, who rule Israel in the years between Abimelech and Jephthah. Then we launch into Jephthah’s story with the appearance of an unnamed prophet who pronounces a judgement against Israel for being unfaithful to the One True God. Emily discusses how her experience in an abusive marriage informs her reading of this text and causes her to see Israel as an abusive spouse, and how God’s response demonstrates a healthy response to attempts at being manipulated.
